Juvéderm is the newest injectable dermal filler that is gaining widespread popularity. It is used to soften deep folds and reduce facial wrinkles. Juvéderm is largely comprised of hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally produced in the body that helps transfer essential nutrients (such as water) to skin cells, helping to support facial structures. Juvéderm was approved by the FDA in 2006 and available in the US since 2007 after being available in Canada and Europe for several years.
Another choice in injectable filler is Restylane – a natural cosmetic filler. Restylane is ideal for facial wrinkles and has been on the market for several years longer than Juvéderm. In fact, Restylane was the first dermal filler approved by the FDA made of a biodegradable hyaluronic acid. This acid has been modified slightly to last longer than the body’s own hyaluronic acid. The natural acid provides volume and fullness to the skin, resulting in decreased wrinkles and less defined folds. The Restylane treatments are almost immediately visible and typically last eight to ten months with some patients reporting results lasting over one year.
